How to Survive a Protest

  • If you discover yourself trapped in an exceedingly dangerous or aggressive protest or riot, keep to side or areas where you can escape easily or wherever it's safest within the group.
  • Minimize your skin exposure.
  • Do not stay in the middle or to the front of a group. The last thing you want to do is get trampled in a stampede.
  • Do not place yourself with demonstrators that are agitators or instigators.
  • If there is escalating violence, immediately retreat to a shelter or building, or secluded entranceway or alley and wait for the group or instigators to leave.
  • If there is looting, immediately leave the area.
  • Avoid any areas where police are actively pushing protestors away by force.
  • If you are arrested and/or detained, DO NOT RESIST, comply with every order.
  • If you hear gunshots, drop to the ground or below window level and retreat to safety.

How to Stay Safe at Home or At an Accommodation

If you are at home or a riot is going outside your hotel room, apartment, condo, etc.:

  • Do not leave your home unless there is an immediate safety concern.
  • Immediately contact law enforcement if you are at home, your front desk for information if at a hotel, and if you are abroad try to contact your front desk then embassy or consulate.
  • If you are near windows, immediately close the blinds or curtains and stay away from the glass.
  • If you have a door that opens to the outside, try to barricade it.
  • Remember to keep loved ones informed of your location and situation.

If You are Trapped in a Car

  • If you see a crowd protesting, never drive to it, look for a detour if possible.
  • NEVER drive through a crowd.
  • If you cannot escape the protestors approaching you, shut off your engine, exit, lock, and escape on foot.
  • If you cannot escape, try to pull over to the side, shut off your engine, lock the doors and remain calm but do not show any hostility or anger.

Each situation is unique, please remember to stay safe and informed. If you notice anything that needs improvement please email us to correct. We simply want you all to be safe and secure during these troubling times.
